Fuel surcharges for HH carriers are now running about .55 cents per mile on every mile travelled. Meaning if a truck hauls 40,000 lbs over 1000 miles, the fuel surcharge is $550.00 This is added ON TOP of the linehaul charges of let's say $2 per mile. SO a $2000 shipment on 40,000 lbs would total $2550.00

For common carriers loading a 40,000 lb truck for many customers, simply stated, the fuel surcharge is divided up by weight. A 2000 lbs shipment would be 5% of the total surcharge meaning $27.50 on top of the linehaul of $100. Total would be $127.50 This only takes into account the most common lanes travelled so if you live in Montanna, and buy from Los Angeles, you pay more of a premium because you live out in the boonies. It cost a truck more to go to Montanna, since there is less freight going to you and also coming back from your area, and the truck must then go back to the nearest hub of activity for that carrier after delivery.

Conversely, if you live in NJ and order parts from Chicago, then that lane is fairly well travelled, so you won't pay as much as the guy who orders from Chicago and takes delivery in Butte, MT.

I can't speak to the USPS, or UPS and Fed Ex, but this is the way we do it in truckload and less than truckload shipments.

With UPS and Fed Ex, you always have the option of opening your own account, and you can send Fed Ex or UPS in to pick up the freight and you pay them direct. You may have to pay for a handling charge for the shipper to prepare your freight for suitable shipping, but you may be able to negotiate that out with the shipper.

Shipping costs, more than anything else, are the first to rise in a inflating market since before you can receive, it must be shipped to you. In the case of buying off the shelf, you have already paid the higher price since the trucker has already charged for the higher fuel price. Notice your food bill lately? I'll bet is is proprtional to the rise in fuel prices percentage wise.

Furthermore, shippers always feel the pinch of higher fuel costs before you do at the pump, since they use diesel fuel, which now runs abot 50 to 75 cents per gallon higher than regular unleaded fuel.

Truckers must always pass the higher cost of trucking on to the buyers. So, if you have a complaint, you really need to take it to the politicians who say who doles out the fuel, how much, and in what manner. Tell them to quit stealing the road and fuel taxes for their favorite pet projects, and put it back into the roads, and eliminate the tolls that jack up the prices of shipping across the board. Deregulated fuel would go a long way to reduce shipping costs.

you think its expensive to ship from coast to coast us guys downunder get hammered for freight,, and also the size of the boxs they put little items in brings up the charges by volume i have just brought a item off xxbay the price was $20 usd the freight down here was $26 usd my 2 cents worth

been buying and selling for years, bottom line is simple: some gouge and some are fair. just be careful who you buy from.

We do not charge extra for all our shipping. The only time we do is some parts have to be shipped other ways. Some orders are so heavy and the parts are small. But there will be hundreds of them. We ship those in metal boxes that are pallets. We charge more for that because we don't ever get them back. Most of our customers have an ongoing freight account that we use. We do our best to shop the best price. But the business we are in when you need parts you need them right then. So you are going to pay more. We have a few guys that are hot shot drivers. But you will pay more for them. But you will get it fast. We are one of two places left that make wooden windmill sucker rod. And parts for them. And we are allso a full machine shop with all the cnc machines. Most of our business is rushed. We don't make money off shipping. But we are not going to loose any.

In defense of C&G I bought some distributor gaskets delivered today. Shipping was $4.00. Service was fast. I don't think it gets much better than that.

If you have something heavy and going a long distance, you can't beat the Post Office's Flat Rate Shipping boxes. They even provide the boxes.
The vendors should check into that.

I ship gaskets that size in padded envolopes from Staples for $2.25 plus about $.75 for the envolope. =$3.00 total. ken ct.

But that wasen't bad from a big box vendor.

I placed an order with C&G on 2-21-13....Had the parts the next day..... 3.7 lbs shipping was $11.50....C&G is very fair and a great asset to our hobby....Gary

There's an interesting comparison, from the SAME shipper. KUBE's package from C&G (small for a shipped box) weighed 1 pound, 8 oz. Cost $17.00. GARY's package from C&G (unknown size) weighed 3.7 lbs. Cost GARY $11.50. Gary's SHIPPING cost was ONLY 2/3 the money, yet KUBE's small package only weighed 40% of what GARY's did. With the facts available here-in, from two guys buying from the SAME shipper, the numbers certainly deserve SOME scrutiny, or at least some justification. DD

Lets not forget the extra cost of having it delivered to a residense. Last one I shipped via motorfreight it was $30. You can also have them call the person and they can pick it up at the terminal. Sometimes they charge $20 for the phone call. Seems outragious for a phone call, but I have been billed for it in the past and it was a charge I did not know about until I recieved the shipping bill. I had quoted the price based on the pro number I recieved when I arranged the shipment. My profit on the part was about $40 and I dropped it off at the dock about 35 miles away to save the customer some on shipping. I now ship everything freight collect and give the customer the Pro number to dipute any extra charges. To the best of my knowledge there have been no more billings for phone calls and things get shipped at the quoted price. No fear from the customer that I am gouging them. I still do dock drops when I can to cut down the shipping cost of having it picked up here, normally about $30 difference. Rod

I hear you, but one is run by the gov, meaning you probably couldn't throw enough money at it to make it efficient/profitable. I work for the gov too, it's hard to watch sometimes.

Sewman is correct on the Priority Mail, they have a 4 or 5 sizes of boxes at No Charge. If it fits one price for the size of box. Delivery is 2 to 3 days, same price anywhere in Cont. USA. No going to the PO to mail they pick-up at home or business. STOP SHIPPING ups. or Fed X. I use them for e-bay and tracking included.

I'm with you on this one! I can not understand tho why anyone who has ever shipped anything thru their business or private transaction...and is aware of what is going on in the world...would complain about a 'specific' business and knock hell out of them (badmouth) over shipping. Don't order from people/businesses , if you don't like their product/timeliness and shipping rates. If you are in business, you darn sure should realize the myriad of things that cause high shipping these days. If you want to save on shipping..go pick it up and see how much you saved. If you ship as a business you should know the (cumulative) price of things such as labor/containers/fasteners/fuel/insurance/vehicles/maintenance/repairs..on/on! If you say that you do realize what costs are involved, again..why would you publicly stab some else's business! That's BS, just have a little self control and quit doing business with whom you disagree. I'm sure that we've all shipped stuff and LOST money on shipping while doing such! I know that I have. Going even to the extent of making custom bullet proof wooden containers triple wrapped to prevent damage to contents..FREE, just to hear feedback....I couldn't get that apart easily! If you want to bitch, bitch about the highest cost of fuel right now this time year...ever!! See where that gets you. BTW - Jim, I love your cookies idea tho

The financial problems the postal service is experiencing has MUCH more to do with the rules imposed upon it by our beloved leaders in Congress than how the PO is run. The postmaster General has told Congress in no uncertain terms what needs to be done and done NOW to get the PO in good shape.
Problem is, the good old boys are afraid of losing votes by (1) shutting down antiquated (and hardly useful) rural post offices and (2) they refuse to quit "stealing" money form the PO to make their books look a bit better and (3) they (Congress) refuses to allow the PO to stop delivering mail six times a week.

IF the PO was allowed to run on its own as it was designed, it would certainly be much less problematic.

I just ordered $70 worth of door items for my 32 from Mac's, $10.99 not bad. On another note E-bay charges a commission on shipping charges of 9%. Pete

Be careful shipping with UPS they now have a too much tape policy. No kidding if they have your credit card on file they can and will charge you an extra $8-10 for too much tape on the package. This happened to me 3 times, I finally called UPS and explained these are heavy items and require that amount of tape. I got nowhere with them saying you only need 4 pieces, one on each corner, aargh.
