Default Re: Are air filters a bad idea?

The other year, I was considering purchase of a 1924 McCormick-Deering 10-20 farm tractor, which had a huge (283 cid) four cylinder engine, a tiny Ensign up-draft carb (gravity fed, of course), and from the factory, an oil-bath air-cleaner.... which was plumbed in such a way that if the carb did flood, the gasoline drained through a sintered bronze "plug", and the air-cleaner would not get swamped with fuel.

There are ways to have a safe and effective air-cleaner system on gravity-fed, updraft carb engines....

I still think it's a worthwhile thing to have.

The only time the Air-Maze on my Flivver swamped was when I had flooded the carb by overchoking... (not that the Air Maze is a particularly effective unit...)
