Re: How they painted 1930's license plate letters
That's pretty neat. I need to restore my plates and a rubber roller would probably do the trick.

Re: How they painted 1930's license plate letters
notice when the inmate reaches for another batch of plates, the rollers roll the last plate about 4 times instead of 1 time. Must have heavy painted numbers on that one.

This didn't work either. Why is this so tough or is it just me?

Re: How they painted 1930's license plate letters
I restored my Mass plates myself. The first time I painted the whole plate the proper maroon color then hand painted the numbers in white. Then someone told me a way to do it so that it would look like a professional did it. First paint the whole plate in white lacquer or what ever the color is correct color for the numbers. Make sure you use laquer paint for the first color. Let it dry completely. I would wait a day or two. Then paint the entire plate again in the proper background color in an enamel based paint. Then wait until the paint dries. Take a clean cloth wrapping it around your finger dipping it into paint thinner and just rub the paint off of each number. Keep moving the cloth to a clean spot each time you dip your finger into the paint thinner. Do not use lacquer thinner, it will remove the laquer paint. Paint thinner will not remove the lacquer paint. It came out beautiful.

Re: How they painted 1930's license plate letters
It appears that the plates are rotated and run through the machine a couple of times to paint the numbers before they are removed and layed out to dry

Re: How they painted 1930's license plate letters
I talked to a plate restorer at the flea market at one time.
The secret is a rubber roller and rolling out a thin coat on glass. Kind of like a printer. You put the paint on the glass and roll it out to a thin even coat and then your can roll the plate. Never done it myself. My guess is it takes some practice. |

Re: How they painted 1930's license plate letters
I know a fellow, who did some beautiful restorations of license plates. He painted the entire plate the numbers color, as Dan Baron described, then painted the whole plate, the background color. Then he used rubbing compound to take the background colors off the numbers. He carefully did it with one finger. They came out really super !

Re: How they painted 1930's license plate letters
Plate restorer here paints the plate the background color and then uses a hard rubber roller to paint the numbers. Rolls the paint on some tin foil first and then the plate.
