Default Question- What is a Babbit?

I've been hearing this term on Model T's. The term is "Babbit." What is a Babbit? What does it do and what does it look like?

Babbit is the metal that is poured on the rods and mains to make the bearing surface.

This site gives some good information & good pictures of the process.

Simply put, modern engines have replaceable thin bearing shells with a babbitt surface already on the inside. Model Ts & others have the babbitt melted & poured in the block & rods, then after cooling it is machined to fit the crank shaft.
