Default 1962 Galaxy 406 questions

Can anybody help me. I have an opportunity to purchase a family owned 1962 Galaxy with the 406 with 3X2 setup. The original owner owned the Ford Dealership, and raced the car. My big question is how do I verify or prove the following:

It was ordered with a 3 speed floor shifter instead of the four speed floor shifter. The daughter claims that her dad ordered it that way. Their is a vintage Sun tach on the steering column. Is it more likely that the dealer moved the 3 on the tree to make it a three on the floor? Would Ford have allowed a dealership owner to get a three speed on the floor? Lastly, what do I offer on this car? It is original paint, a 100% rust free body, runs and drives and has 80k. Any help would be appreciated.

You can check the engine type ( 406 4V or 6V ) originally installed, trans, color, interior color and rear axle ratio on the trim tag by the hinges of the drivers door. Don't listen to Don, he's a cheapskate. I'll pay $5, and they can keep the tach.

You might want to scroll down to 1962 and give this a read about transmission options http://www.dearbornclassics.com/galaxie.html Does this Ford have the 406 fender emblems?

Doesn't seem to make much sense that it was ordered with a 3-spd if it was for racing, especially if the 4-spd was standard with the 406 3 duece option. Is there linkage still on the steering column? I'm not a Galaxie expert by any means ( actually not an expert on anything! ) but it sounds to me like the car was ' assembled ' after the dealership got it. To me the story doesn't ad up. Do what Streetdreams said--check the trim tag inside the door.

Eddie

P.S.: I have no idea on the value, I've been into bikes now for yrs because I can't afford to hot rod cars anymore.

I've never seen an original 406 car with 3speed on the column. I had a '62 Ford Convert with the factory M code 390 tri-power motor and it had a 4speed from the factory.

If it's a genuine 406 car with 3speed, it has to be rare! The 3speed manual trans of that era were not that strong. I've broke a few of them with a near stock 312, can't imagine it holding up very long behind a 406.

62 406 cars came 2 ways, a 3 speed on the column with overdrive, or 4 speed models came both in the 500 series and xl series. there was 1 reportedly with an automatic, but seems to have been a ford executive car. the 3 speed o/d trans were capable of the torque the 406 cars produced with alittle sensitivity.have a 4speed xl car for sale now

I knew of one '62 4 door Galaxie with a 4V 406 and automatic trans, all factory. It was a local car for several years in the '60s and owned by a friend's dad.

The '60s were pretty wide open--you could get all kind of oddball combinations--some pretty cool, some just oddball. Growing up in a G.M. manufacturing town, I got to see a lot of them. Like the 7 or 8 Nova SS 4-drs, a Buick Wildcat station wagon and a friend of mines Mothers car, a '65 Impala SS convertible with a 409 and Powerglide. So I'm sure 100 miles south in Dearborn they had their oddities there too.

Dr. in my home town (Pardeeville, WI) had a 62 (?) Chevy 6 passenger wagon with a 409/4speed so the odd stuff was out there.

There were oddities in the early 60's. If you had the money, most dealers could order any combo you wanted. Where I grew up in the Spokane, Wa. area, there was an elderly couple raising an only grandson. When he was old enough to drive, they didn't have a car anymore. Granny said she would buy one but it must be a station wagon. The grandson ordered a 62 country squire, bucket seats, 4 spd and 6V 406. He had to take the folks to church on Sunday, and then was off to the Deer Park dragstrip afterwards afterwards. The car was white and very cool at the time, a real sleeper.

There's a '67 Ford wagon ( '68?) running around here in SE Michigan with a factory 428 / 4 speed / buckets. Unrestored, original, seen it off and on over the years at car shows and cruises. Saw it parked in front of the old Wixom Plant one day when I was there for a work related visit.
