Stupid question- rear pinion removal?
Hey guys...I know this may sound stupid...but how do you remove the pinion gear from the banjo? With the double tapered race I assume the race has to come out before the pinion and rear pinon bearing? I looked in my book and it shows a tool AATA-1. I have no such tool, is there another way to do this?
This is a 35-36 center section if that matters. Thanks all, Chris

Re: Stupid question- rear pinion removal?
There are old posts on this. I assume a search will find them. I once posted a picture on the old Barn showing how I do it, and others responded with similar setups. Some guys have a puller that will work - I think Richard EV8G is one with a puller. My setup is to use a press, pushing one direction on the banjo housing, the other direction on the tail end of the pinion. Tail end of the pinion means to push with something small OD, to fit inside the pinion end-bearing (and not touching the pinion end-bearing). I use a socket, here.
You don't have to get the race out first - it will be pushed out with the pinion and the bearing. |

FYI: There are no stupid questions, unless it's the one you "didn't" ask.

really does show how to do it right, and then agian I was sucessful making a puller with a jack, chains and heat. I wish first I had heard about removing the outer bearing and weld around the race on a junk bearing to shrink it. I did it on another one I was salvaging, hot bead of 7018 in there loosened it right up, piece of exhaust over the pinion to protect surfaces & threads. I thought I was saving a bunch going to the bearing store with the Timken numbers, but not much different than the antique ford vendors price. |

Re: Stupid question- rear pinion removal?
I made what I consider to be a nice pinion puller and posted pictures of how it works, etc., here on the new barn and on the old barn as well. I'm away from home right now and my computer files but could post something again when I get back home or I could email/pm those pics to you.

Re: Stupid question- rear pinion removal?
Lot easier on the parts if you use a little heat when you start pressing the gear out of the housing. Ford shop manual says you MUST heat the neck of the banjo before attempting to press out the race.
