Gumpy,

I have used several of those sanding discs from HD to remove paint down to bare metal without 'sanding the metal away'. They are made by Norton and called 'Rapid Strip' wheels 4" x 1" with an arbor to fit your drill motor.

They work great and as they wear down you can use the smaller wheel to get into tighter curved areas.

Hopes this helps, Jim

I did my whole pickup with the 3M 4 inch disks from Wall-Mart with no metal loss at all. Don't know what they call them but they look like a black sponge disk on an arbor. will never use anything else. JMO ~~Walts37~~

I've done two cars completely back to bare metal with 3M or Norton Paint Stripping discs. Works a treat.

Theres a easy way to strip that works well . I use paint stripper and a razor blade then a twisted wire brush on a dewalt grinder i found it to be easer then sanding pluss the striper has a metal protector in it so you wont have it rust back over in a day our two.I have done 2 cars this way thats what worked best for me.

there's two kinds i know of one that looks kind of like a sponge on a wheel and one that looks like a bunch of really hard pipe cleaners on a wheel. both work fine but personally and professionally i prefer sand blasting. it's much faster and fairly inexpensive the only problem is finding someone to do it that wont warp the metal. we usually tell our customers that we'll strip, bodywork, and shoot for one price. if they want to get it blasted somewhere else that's fine but we'll have to rebid the job after it's blasted otherwise we end up spending a ton of time fixing the blasters warpage.

long story short....i prefer sand blasting for a whole car with all the pieces. but if youre just talking about a fender or something i'd get a stripper wheel.

I have used heavy duty paint strippers on both a 40 sedan and a model A sedan along with steel wool and razor blades,,it's messy but effective. HRP

I have used por strip with steel wool on 3 vehicles, it sprays on like water & is easy to use unlike the thick paint removers.

This is what I use, I call them "rice cakes" because they look like a black rice cake. 3M has them but I use the ones from harbor freight (cheaper)
use them in a 4" grinder tool. they take the paint off fast. I did a whole car with maybe six of these.
