Default 30/31 Vicky or 31 Slant Windshield Fordor - Window help

Hello everyone!

I could use a little help from anyone who owns a Slant Windshield Victoria or a Slant Windshield Fordor car. Specifically a 1931 Fordor, but I think the answers are the same.

I could use some guidance with the window channels on the front doors. When I purchased my car everything was falling apart and I don't have enough to reference. I would really like to know how the felt guides/channels as well as any or all bumpers were mounted to their intended positions. I haven't purchased the replacement pieces yet and want to also make sure I get the right parts.

Pictures would REALLY be helpful, or if someone can tell me of a service bulletin that might provide this information and where to get it, that would be great!

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
S

I just did this for a friends 1931 fordor. The 1931's differed from earlier years in that the channels don't screw into the door wood. They hook at the top. Their is more metal in the 31's and that has to be taken into account. Once you buy the replacement hardware you will start to see how things go together. The interior window frame is different in that in uses a mix of wood screws and two part screws around the top and sides. Take your time with the window glass their is one way and one way only to get the glass out. I am sorry I didn't take any photos as we were on a short time limit.

Mr. scootermcrad:

Go to www.ocmafc.com This is the web site for the Orange County Model A Ford Club, which is in your neighborhood. On the home page there is a menu at left. Scroll down to "tech articles" and click. It will bring up a new menu. At the top is my name, click on it. A new menu of technical articles will come up. Scroll down to the article on "window channeling". It is forth from the bottom. Click on it and it will bring up an article about installing window channeling in the two front doors of a Victoria. The article appeared a few years ago in the Victoria Association newsletter. The article should be able to walk you through the restoration process.

Good luck with your project,
Tom Endy

The Tom's article really helped me a lot when I installed my window glass. But getting the channels hooked into place is a bit of an art. The front and rear doors are assembled differently.

One tip: Make sure that the vertical metal tracks are in good shape. It is possible for some of the spot welds holding them in place to break, allowing the glass to rattle around. Getting a MIG torch inside the door to fix them can be tricky...

My apologies to Tom. I forgot about the article on the Orange County site. I had read it before I had done a 31 coupe and an 30 sedan and it was a big help.

Also note you will need to modify just slightly the tabs on the new REPO channels to make them fit better or should I say easier. Just did mine last week on the SW. Hint again you put in the glass first in the fronts and channel AND glass in the rears to fit

Thank you very much gentleman! I appreciate all the great info! Going to go check OCMAFCA's site. One of you kind folks sent me a an article via email yesterday from the International Victoria Association. Been reading through it. Great stuff!

what I mean is you will have much more space to line up the channels and slide them in in the front after the glass is installed. There will be room to work The rears are very tights will have to put in the channel in them fist, leave the top unhooked and slide the glass in between to install. Make sense?

I have a late 31 slant and just finished up putting the channels in my front doors, The others are right once you get your new ones and see how they are made you can do it. It was the first time for me and made it. Tomorrow I start on the back suicide doors and I also have to replace one of the windows on the driver side back door. Any good hints out there for getting the broken glass out of the channel and putting the new glass in?

To get the broken glass out of the channel,I pry up under the bottom of the glass with a screw driver until all the glass is removed. To put the new glass in,use some glass setting tape from a glass shop.Be sure to fit the glass in the channel the right way around with the correct overhang on the channel ends.I put the top edge of the glass on a piece of wood & carefully tap the channel in place.

The slants are supposed to use a special setting rubber that has an extra lip that goes to the outside. It seals the gap at the bottom of the window when it is rolled up. I got it from Bratton's (it was actually made by Dennis Carpenter, I guess also for V-8s).
I used mineral spirits as a temporary lubricant when fitting the glass, rubber, and channel together. It worked very well, and soon evaporated.
