Dual Side Mounts On A 30 Murray Sedan
One of my fellow club members has been working on a frame off restoration on a 1930 Murray Fordor Sedan. The frame and powertrain are done and now its on to the body work. His wife noticed another club car with dual side mounts and as this is susposed to be "her car" told Bill that is what she wanted on her car.
Well 4 of us showed up after Monday coffee and got started cutting the tins. We were all pretty surprised at how well it went. Yes there was some coaxing of sheet metal but nothing drastic. The link below shows a pretty good pictoral presentation of the process. Dual Side Mounts

I installed two wells on my roadster and found the use of a jig saw with a fine tooth cutting blade for cutting steel sheets does a superclean cut in the fender and easy to cut the curved sections. I left the ffender bolted right to the along with fender brace, the fender does not vibrate. Gord. B by the bay

I'm wondering: Are the repro sidemount support arm and its mounting bracket of good quality, or do you have to scrounge up original ones?

Re: Dual Side Mounts On A 30 Murray Sedan
We used two repro parts from Brattons and they worked just fine.

Re: Dual Side Mounts On A 30 Murray Sedan
Interesting that there are some working hard to put wells in their fenders while two of my friends are offering their welled fenders in trade for equivalent unwelled. In the memorable past the wells were a primium item and now in this area they are going out of style. Like trunk vs rumble lids. Many of us want what we don't have. rumble may be comfortable for children but the current size of citizens changed that. Could there be a local trend toward the original, less gawdy look in Models A. Good Luck: Fred A

Remember when you get finished if the tire is too tight in the well you can always let a little air out and carry a tire pump. From what I have read the Firestone tires are slightly larger than the originals and tend to have a problem.

Re: Dual Side Mounts On A 30 Murray Sedan
I have dual wells and firestones and both tires had to be deflated some to get into the wells.

If Bill had his way they would have stayed original.

Re: Dual Side Mounts On A 30 Murray Sedan
When my Dad bought a 1929 Sport Coupe he had the dealer supply dual side mounts. He was charged $24 for the pair and $12 for six painted wheels. A trunk rack was $10.80, bringing the total to $619.80. As the song goes "Those were the days my friends"!

Re: Dual Side Mounts On A 30 Murray Sedan
When I installed the SideMount Brackets with the wells already installed (that's the way I got them), I noticed that when I mounted the wheels, they leaned way in toward the car body. I had to install 5 large washers on the brackets where the rims mount as Spacers to get them to sit upright.
I might also add that I mounted the SideMount Brackets right where they belong. Of course I had to lift the body 4" off the frame to get the splash panels off and I had to drill new mounting holes in the frame. I used the divots already in the frame. I followed directions I received on the Fordbarn Forum. (thanks you very much) I also had to relieve air pressure to 5 lbs. to get the tires to slip into the wells. |
