Default Color of starter

What color is it supposed to be, black or ford green?

As previous responders have said black is the color, but do not paint the rear of the starter surface that bolts against the flywheel housing, and in fact do not paint the matching surface of the flywheel housing. The reason is to give the starter the maximum electric ground for tip top performance.

I have been painting mine satin or semi gloss black. the satin finish doesn't show pits and surface flaws as badly as gloss black.

The new R/G and judging standards says semi-gloss for the starter, generator and distrubutor housing.
