I am working through the banjo on my '39. Thought I should upgrade the torque tube while I have it out. The rest of the car is all original (what I mean is if replacement parts were used they replicated the original parts).
But, when I looked at the bearing race on the torque tube (front), it is not split. Rather it is a solid race, definitely not original design. Has anyone seen this style replacement race? And if so, how to remove in order to get to the seal? |

If so, so race car clamshells are one piece and designed for a straight tube torque tube. It would be helpful if you can post of picture of the part you are referring to. We're happy to help. |

ONLY the sleeve which houses 4645 is split it's made originally by HYATT also : BERLISS/BOWER/RBC/SKF also made it extremely expensive here in Australia to find/locate/source the OEM ORIGINAL FORD/HYATT type !!!!!, the FORD spare parts vendors in the USA have them far&way cheaper than what i have to pay for them form USA!!!!!
, i can provide the aftermarket (bearing companies) part number for the sleeve?.....

Yes, I am referring to 4655; most replacement guides indicate that this is a split shell that is twisted out of its detent with the appropriate tool.
But the race (shell) I have is solid. Ken/Alabama; how did you remove the solid race and seal from your vehicle? I assume since it was a 39 it had a bearing in the middle of the torque tube. |

This issue has come up and been discussed on here before. There is a thicker walled bearing outer race in some torque tubes from the factory. Try doing a search of earlier threads about this....

Yes some of the original Ford races were solid and not split.

Is it possible that the one piece bearing race was pressed in first, followed by the seal?
That would make it easier to remove the seal without having to remove the race. |

Brian,
Mea Culpa; Alzheimer's has set in. By the way any tips on using the search feature? When I, for example, type in Torque Tube seal removal, I get back Torque tube answers, seal answers, making research inefficient. Other search sites allow coupling the search parameters such that your get a targeted search. Am I missing something? |

Tubby,
Try putting your search terms in quotes. Ken
