How does the intermediate gear come off the main shaft to replace the low/reverse sliding gear on a "early" (32-34) transmission?

if you look at the thrust washers each side of the 2nd gear, particularly where they fit on the splines of the mainshaft, you will notice a 'key' in one of the splines. That key is what holds those thrusts in position. Now, rotate the 2nd gear and you'll notice a hole about 1/8 "dia located about midway in one of the teeth. Position the gear so the hole is directly above the key, and using a pin punch, nail, whatever, you can depress a little spring loaded pin through that hole, whilst depressing that pin, use a narrow screwdriver to push the key forward and out. Once it's out, you can rotate the front thrust washer so it aligns with the splines in the mainshaft and pull it off, then the gear and its bronze bush, then rotate the rear thrust to enable removal of it.
