Default Crank shaft

Does anybody recognize ths crank shaft 59 block with threaded oil gallery plugs next to each rod journal---???? The casting is diff to have these---as of now its a mystery-----

Yes Tim , it’s from the first flathead I ever bought when I was 15 still have it. Would be a Canadian engine. 41 Merc. Has the 4 freeze plugs in panels like earlier engines. Is 3 3/16” bore.

Now THAT is a weird one! I've never seen that flathead crankshaft and God knows I've looked at a 'few' in my 50+ years of working on these goofy engines! Thanks for the pics and thanks Tony for the information.

And it has a rope rear main seal to------with floater rod bearings---pre 49-------------?

Ok tim were did yore motor come from??? This is a 46 or latter---59 series block--?????in a 40 coup --ca car--

"After WW2 Canada produced their own variation of the 59 series motors, the C69A. These had special insert rod bearings that ran in crankshafts with two oil holes per rod throw (like the later 8BA cranks) and used modified floating type rods with tangs added to locate the thick bearings. Functionally the C69A blocks are equivalent to USA 59 blocks, unless you happen to get a full flow modified block.

The C69A casting on the top of the bell housing and extra oil port are shown in this picture."



I don't see threaded crank plugs in this picture.

Possible WW2 Military production. Extra port for oil cooler. Many were surplus after War -have one in my 114X Mercury. Canadian Ford war production started 1938. Newc

Nothing wrong with what you have. What are the raised letters on the upper portion of the bell housing?

Here’s my crank and block it came in. I have owed this engine for 55 years the first flathead I bought and still have it. Block is about to get a stroker crank and all the goodies.

Nothing like a good ole' 'Keystone' block - looks very similar to a 1940 Merc block (which weren't relieved), or a WWII military/industrial block (with the factory relief).

Completely off-topic, but was that block de-rusted by soaking in a molasses solution? I saw one years ago that had the same surface condition because it had been derusted with molasses.

It has been shake and bake cleaned. Has never been rusty.

I remember seeing a block with "that patina" years ago and wondering why it looked like that. Interesting stuff about this crank for sure, thanks everyone & Denny.

Interesting, Dale. I have three "keystone" blocks. Two are not relieved and one is. Sadly, the relived and one of the non-relieved are cracked in the #3 intake. Not sure what I'm going to do with them. They are all raised intake and 3 3/16" bore, so like you said, similar to Merc blocks.
