The state won’t let me register my original issue 29 tags. Problem is the OCPU is registered as a 30, pretty sure the motor is a 30. The states telling me to show them something proving it’s a 29, not so easy when it’s on the frame. Any ideas much appreciated.

How about some photos of a 29 versus a thirty showing the different styles, Since they dont have a clue what a 28-29 or 30-31 model "A" looks like!

You should be able to show them the Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards. In addition to the body styles being different, the front crossmember is also. How about wheels (21” vs 19”)?

They will probably want to see the serial number on the frame. Yeah, I know what that involves.

Maybe it is a 1930. The PU and AA's used 1929 sheet metal until
mid 1930. Here is a picture of an early 1930 AA open cab. Last edited by Bob C; 08-11-2025 at 10:21 PM. |

If it really is a 1929, then is there a date stamped on your gas tank that you could show them.....like in this photo?

Are you saying the original issue 29 tags ( ? License plates ? ) from the state originally issued by them and they don’t have the records ? Shame on them ! Go to another facility ? ! Different people may have different outcomes

The early 1930 commercial pickups look like a 1929 but they have some 1930 characteristics. The steering may be 1930 and the fuel cap is 1930 but all the DMV wants is the VIN. If the motor is stamped 1930 then the frame number should be 1930. Pencil rubbings and photos of the frame number may be acceptable if it is a 1929 serial number. Verification of a frame number needs to be done by a state official such as a Utah Highway Patrol trooper from the beehive. Some states allow state inspection stations to verify the numbers. Pulling the cab up is a Pita but sometimes it's the only way to know.
You may have to look for 1930 plates. Last edited by rotorwrench; Yesterday at 10:08 AM. |

Why does the state of Utah care?

The thing about dealing with bureaucracies like the DMV, is that the State of Utah does not care, nor does the DMV care, whether your vehicle is a 1929 or a 1930 as long as it's included in their database. It's that a clerk in the DMV has decided that it's important! You may be wasting your time trying to convince that clerk that you are right. That's why it's probably best to try another office.
