I’m planning an oil change for both my gearbox and differential. Stock 41 side shift box and banjo. Last time this was a pretty laborious operation lying on the floor with a hand operated pump for quite a while.
Floor is pretty cold down under this time of year. Thought I’d ask what are you folks using for moving thick oil? |

I only know the hard way, using an oil suction gun. Slow and messy.

Remove the drain plug at the bottom of the cases. No need for a pump to remove oil.

It’s not the removal, gravity takes care of that. Getting oil back in is the challenge. What are you guys using to get thick oil back in?

Use both a ketchup style squeeze bottle and a gear oil pump. I have used the cheap squeeze bottles for corn head grease, brake fluid, gear oil. They do pretty well if there is room.

Yeah, wrong hemisphere, something like that. Gear oil is really thin now in Arkansas.

I have found that using a caulking gun works best for filling if you have an old empty caulking tube. Insert the empty caulking tube in the caulking gun, fil it with gear oil, replace the plastic "plunger" and squeeze the trigger to fill transmission or rear end.

Some of the fluids come in a soft plastic bag you can roll up and the fluids come out. I have been using the pump as shown above #6 post. Only draw back is limited space under the car but just jack it up. The pump will fit quart containers and the 1/2 Gal size.

I have a hand pump, but I’m starting to suspect it may be a bit small. Took a few hundred pumps to fill the gearbox last time. Was like filling it up a spoonful at a time.
I was running 80W-90, but it was suggested I try something thicker, which I did. It might be the cooler weather but the synchros don’t work so well with thicker oil - wear might be an issue, so I’m looking to revert. Before I go through the hassle of the refill I thought I’d ask. Many thanks for the suggestions all. |

With a floor shifter, (Model A) I remove the shifter and pour it down through that, until it comes out the fill hole in the side. Yes, no help for colum shifters
If I have to fill the rear end, I use a long piece of 3/8" or larger fuel hose- tape part of it to a stick so no sagging, takes a lot of time, but I am in no hurry... Karl |

I use a pressure setup-got tired of using the hand pump (as shown in the above post) while lying under jack stands. Made from a garden sprayer, some 3/8 tubing and a shut off valve, just pressurize it, put the hose end in the filler hole, and open the valve-works fine with 80-90W gear oil, not sure how 140 weight would be.
