Fordson and Lawrie,
Off topic, but worth knowing (to me) is what in the way of stamped numbers exist on your firewalls. Normally Canadian-made '33s and '34s have no patent plate (those are U.S. patents on the U.S. patent plates) and no body number plates. But they have the engine number stamped on the firewall. Is that the case with your '34s? Also "different" is that at least some of the '33-'34s sold in South Africa had the engine number stamped on the right frame rail rather than on the left side. |

Near the center of the bottom portion of the sloped center section of the firewall. It is in addition to the number stamped on top of the chassis frame rail.

The Body Number on Australian 1933 and 1934 Fords is still visible when fitted with the Accessory Tool Box. This is my 1934 Ford Phaeton. |

Well on my 34 there was definately no Body Number Plate or Patent Plate. My Engine number is also stamped on the left hand frame rail. But i was not aware of a number in the left hand slope of the fire wall. But my cars body has been worked on before and not exactly professional, body filler, resprayed etc. Although having cleaned that all up i cannot remember anything on the firewall. I will also come back to you David on that. I might be able to also ask a good South African Friend, who owns 2 roadsters 33/34, on the position of the engine numbers. There should not be a difference within the modelrange in South African Fords, i guess. They should have all been stamped the same way or position.

The Number on the US Drivers side frame rail on my 34 SA Coupe. I am not sure if the frame / chassis belongs to my 3-Coupe body or if it comes from a donour car.

At some point in the car's past a new number (not either U.S. or Canadian for '34s) was stamped on your frame.

(1933 - 39 roadster, coupes, etc.) never any 5 or 3 windows though. His reply to my question was, that he has never seen or has had a body plate on the fords of that time period. The Vin Number is on the RHS ( drivers side ) frame rail, next to the steering box. Some vehicle bodys have the number in addition to the cowl, others not. My car was at one stage restored or built up, the local South African Authorities have stamped a new VIN number on my LHS frame rail. The original VIN Nb. is probably still on the RHS frame rail, but covered in paint. If iam with my car in October i will have a closer look. All very interesting. Regards Randolf |
