This common filter upgrade for the Model A Fords uses a Wix(etc) Ford spin on filter. It is sold by all the venders. This filter installs parallel to the centerline on the engine. I have seen some recommendations calling for the alteration of the rubber baffle on the filter base. The reasoning being this allowed better flow into the filter.
What is the experience of others on this forum. Is this needed to be done or not?

I don't see the point in doing that; it's an anti-drainback valve.


If you have the filter mounted horizontally (with the anti-drainback valve disabled), then won't your filter be, well, drained when you first start the engine? That means a bit of time without oil flowing (more important for a full-flow setup, less so with the A-6705).


I've got that exact same setup (A-6705), and have NOT altered my filter. It works fine, as is - i.e. the oil in my engine is definitely cleaner looking than it would have been without a filter.


I have, though, also added a 90-deg adapter and now have the filter mounted vertically. Regardless - that doesn't change my point: I don't see a reason to mess around with the anti-drainback valve on the filter. Even with the partial flow setup, there's more than enough oil pressure for the filter to do its job (IMO, of course).

The recommendation to punch holes in the ADB baffle is based on older filter designs where that membrane could, in some cases, become stiff and impede the flow of oil into the filter. If your filter has a silicone membrane (usually red vs the older/cheaper black nitrile), there is no risk of this happening and no need to damage the ADB function by putting holes in it.

I used the Kenz original of this design with unmodified Motorcraft FLP-1A filter with no issues. Oil in the engine stays cleaner, and oil from the filter drains the same color as the engine. I've gone to changing oil at max 5K or every year, earlier if it's convenient.

Do NOT modify the oil filter, even tho a popular Youtube "Enfluencer" suggests to do so in one of his videos. The Model A oil pump is more than capable of suppling enough oil thru a filter.

I have this style oil filter on my A and was surprised how clean the oil stays. I use a wix filter and don't mess with the anti-drain flaps.

I've been using the Wix 51307 filter for quite some time with no problems. It has the anti drain-back valve discussed in this thread. One feature I really like about this filter is it's a bit shorter than the full length filter supplied with the kit. If anyone has concerns about the anti drain-back valve, and you shouldn't, there are filters that will fit the kit that do not have an anti drain-back valve.

How much additional oil is needed to bring the level to normal?
How long does it take at idle speed before the filter is doing its job?
Is it accurate that until the oil makes its way through the new filter it is no worse than having no filter?

David, in order from above:

— Depends on the oil filter, but a half quart is a good starting point. You can do your own experiment by filling the filter prior to installing and noting the volume. Some folks recommend this as good practice anyhow.
— As long as oil is circulating, the filter is working. A case can be made that a full flow filter might be more effective initially because all volume goes through the filter.
— That’s a reasonable statement, but again, as long as the pump is pumping oil, it’s getting filtered.

Sounds like pre filling the filter before installing it makes a dandy test of the anti-flowback valve!
