On most of our old cars, the problem starts in the TANK . . . have it cleaned . . . thoroughly. If there is corrosion/rust in it . . . then the problem can be such that the tank needs to be replaced.

I brought my 32 tank to a big truck service place that had a "stream wand" that they used to clean the tank out. I've not had a problem with it and it was super gunky (had sat for 50 years - originally with fuel in it).

Curious is any of that debris was ferrous and could be picked up with a magnet. If so, I'd have to think it's coming from the tank and/or any possible old steel fuel line into the pump.

ya, it's possible...but i didn't check. my guess is that it's mostly rust and possibly some dust and dirt from the tank that got kicked up and out of the tank when i threw a few gallons in for the first time in more than what might have been a decade.

the car was most likely a show car and is still in excellent cosmetic condition, but was probably shown (i'm guessing here) in one of the classes that emphasize originality and where the cars enjoy little run time.

anyway, i don't think any part of the fuel line, from the outlet of the tank to the inlet of the carb, is made of steel except, perhaps, the screen inside the fuel pump. it looks like the majority of it is some kind of copper alloy and a bit of 1/4" hose.

BTW, here's a nice one at a more reasonable price...too bad it's has male-to-male connectors.

Fuel lines for early Fords were copper plated rolled steel, manufactured by Bundy. No alloy. Bundy is still in business, those lines are still available. A much better option today is cupronickle, a superior alloy impervious to corrosion, very easy to bend, and resembles the original Bundy lines.

Also known as Nicop. Good stuff, easy to work with, no corrosion, available at most stores, or online.

Is this alloy tubing acceptable for use as brake lines?

Huey, thanks for taking the time to share your findings. Much appreciated.

Out of curiosity, how much stroke did the fuel pump have? I found a 'new' one in my junk the other day that I want to fit to a motor I'm selling, but it only had about 1/4" movement in it - that didn't seem right to me.

if the pump was not anchored securely, i found that using the lever to be very difficult to operate fully. and so too was surprised at how little movement there was. once i put the pump (gently) in a vice, i got better results. YMMV.

i think that ford did experiment, as evidenced by the various pump's gasket dimensions, with the length of the push rod and consequently the length of the throw over the years. the one for my 1941 fuel pump was possibly one of the shorter ones.

The stuff that looks like sand is typically what I see in small motor carbs where Ethanol based fuel was drained and winterized or properly additive used.

WTF is YMMV?
