Question 64 f100 questions

Hello everyone!
I have a couple questions regarding my f100 , first all i was wondering if anyone here has dabbled into converting the single master cylinder to a dual one and kept drum all the way around? im building a day 2 inspired f100 and want to keep it as period correct as possible so i dont want to get disc brakes unless theres a factory style looking disc brake system. Also anyone here know where im able to get steering box rebuild parts for it? as a broke college student i try to do everything myself and want to rebuild the steering box but dont really see where im able to get a kit. I saw dennis carptenter sells the sector shaft and rock auto sells the bearings and seals but is there more? thanks again everyone!!

Hi Steve, there is a member here that repairs F-100 steering boxes.
His name is Mel Gross and is located in Cal.

Give him a call, see if he can help.

His phone number is 714-292-8660

It is a 1964 F-100?

2WD/4WD?

Engine - TRANS?

MS or PS?

Yes, you can install a DUAL RESERVOIR DRUM/DRUM MC.

Do you feel comfortable showing a photo of the RATING PLATE?

Here is info on the MC - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-cylinder.html

1967 MUST MANUAL DRUM BRAKES - 1" BORE SIZE - Original FORD PN C9AZ 2140-D for reference.

I would buy NEW RAYBESTOS or CENTRIC as they are quality.

The steering box is going to be a little trickier as to what you find at tear-down.

There should be an ASSEMBLY ID TAG on the box.

The RATING PLATE will be the WARRANTY/VIN PLATE. Don't need it at this time.

From the way so many people want to convert to dual master cylinders you would think that thousands of people were killed in auto crashes because of failures of those 'dangerous" single master cylinders.
I am not at all convinced that is true.
If you rebuild the entire system and use quality fluid AND maintain the Emergency brake system as originally designed, I do not see a problem with the single master cylinder. If you do have a hydraulic failure, the mechanical Emergency brake functions in much the same manner as the dual system--it might take a second to realize and apply, and those rear wheels are not very efficient at stopping, but they would be the same rear wheel brakes as in the dual master cylinder.

Cool Re: 64 f100 questions

When I was a mere lad sixteen years of age ... ... the 63 IMPALA CONV (w/ top down) I was driving (with cousin and his girlfriend in the front seat with me) lost the brakes and then went over a steep embankment (forty-five degree - approx 150ft).

There was a roadway at the bottom, and mid-way down the grade made the decision I did not want to hit and enter at speed. I decided to cut it right preventing doing that and it came to rest in that position. How it did not turn over and roll I will never know.

An emergency (hand/parking brake) is not designed nor meant to brake a car. Nasty and unexpected things can happen very quickly.

The best thing(s) happening (IMO) were -

1956 FORD - LIFEGUARD SAFETY DESIGN

The FED mandating the SPLIT DUELING RESERVOIR MC BRAKING SYSTEMS (w/ PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL VALVE and WARNING LAMP)
