I recently bought a 59AB with a gray sealer, looks like insulation, seems to
be Ok. Not a fan any sealer.
Fingers crossed

Once you drive it a bit and retorque the heads, you might think about a can of ceramic seal - while you are still running plain water. After that, then you can put anti-freeze in it.

Alright I’ve now gone through two heat cycles and torque. Remains to be seen if I think it’s leaking internally anymore. But, it runs better with one new possible major problem. I always kind of thought the engine was more rackety when running than it should be but chalked it up to inexperience and not knowing flatheads. Well, now that I think the piston was maybe hitting the head before it runs much smoother at rpm now. Great!

But,

Upon first start up it seems as though now I have a knock if some sort. I can’t pinpoint it with my cheap stethoscope. I can’t decide if it is a knock or something else. Never heard it before so it’s strange.

Oh and now my horn doesn’t work and the electric fan keeps popping fuses. Gotta be related to me taking everything apart (and reinstalling it all at like 2am. Whoops!).

At this point I’m in sort of give up mode. Haha. Just gonna drive it and see what happens. It runs great and is still fun to drive. I’ll probably start working on my back up engine again. Need to get the block to the machine shop to see if it’s any good.

I might be a little behind, but over the years I have used a boiler seal the seal leaks in the block or head. Granted all my 50+ years was with diesel engines in large trucks and equipment.

Ok I know yall are bored with it but I hate doing research and searching for threads that are unfinished.

I am feeling optimistic. Today I realized the fan wire behind the intake was pinched by the intake which was causing it to short. So, I took the manifold off and fixed the wire and put it all together. Went for a drive. Knock gone! I’m not totally sure what “dieseling” is but I think that’s what it was doing. Intake leak was making it run lean and I’m assuming that’s why it was knocking. Now it’s never run better or stronger or smoother. I am feeling pretty good the water leak is fixed but time will tell. Thanks yall!

Things seem better but I have been off the road for about 2-3 weeks. The gas tank started leaking so I pulled in and bought a new one. Wipe it’s out I decided to work on the trunk (it was half cut out). But I’m losing motivation on that so I may put the trunk replacement off (again) and put the new fuel tank in so I can drive again. Fix one thing another breaks. Good times.
