I use a pipe vise on a tripod too.I find it very easy to work on the rear end that way.I put the passenger side trumpet in the vise,and put a block under it to give it a slight angle.I can slide the carrier in there and have it stay there by gravity.I can adjust away all I want because the clamped part is not in the way to work.
