2 Door Ranchwagon Exhaust

53 Ford Ranchwagon with Flathead V8. Is there a way to make the exhaust for a sedan work on my Ranchwagon? The pictures I have seen look similar, but not sure if it is just the tailpipe that would be different, or the entire system. Thanks if you know.

From what I understand the tail pipe location for a wagon needs to exit to the side so that exhaust fumes don't get sucked backed in through the rear window/tail gate as shown in this photo. I believe that on sedans the tail pipes exit straight back under the rear bumper.

Thanks for the info. I imagine something can be rigged up to extend/reroute the tailpipe if that is the only difference. Worth a shot. Cheers. TommyJ

Well, the Ranchwagon frame/suspension must be different from start to finish. The exhaust pipe that connects to the exhaust manifold doesn't even fit. It hits the idler arm on the Ranchwagon, so it won't enter the frame port holes. The muffler bracket looks the same, but it is different also. It will work because the rubber arms swivel, but it is narrower. These parts were for a 4 door. I guess I will go to a muffler shop and get an exhaust made up. Thanks TommyJ..

I found this in the Ford Parts Book.
Muffler inlet pipe AC 5246-A 1952-53 except conv.
Muffler A9A 5230-A 1949-53
Muffler outlet pipe B2A 5255-B S/D & S/w 1952-54

Heed the warning about positioning the pipe pointing to the back and not to the side. It could save your car and your life.

Thanks for the info Bob. I can't find a picture of that muffler inlet pipe, but it must be a separate pipe between the exhaust pipe and the muffler.?

I have looked there, but didn't see the ranchwagon/station wagon listed.

Be careful which exhaust manifold is in your ranch wagon. The original 52-53 manifold from a 215 has the exhaust exit straight down. The more common manifold angles back at a 45 degree and was used from 54 to the end of 223 production, I think. The manifold to muffler pipe needs to match which manifold you are running.

I had a friend who had several wagons and did his duals like post #2 did on that wonderful
1955 wagon. It was o k, but do TAKE HEED of straight out the back !!!!
