1951 Ford overdrive

I am new here not sure how to do this but… my 51’ ford flathead 6 overdrive cable will not push in to engage the OD. The cable is new and shouldn’t be the problem. Also, after a lot of finessing I was able to push it in and the OD did engage so it isn’t electrical. Since then I have pulled the cable back out for fear it won’t go back in. Can anyone help me out? Thank you
