McMaster costs about twice or more than the Thompson website shows. But I didn’t see anything about the soft end on their site. I’ll give them a call next week.

Bored & stroked, Series N Thomson shafting is maximum 0.0002" undersized, while the material pictured is maximum 0.001" undersized. I understand the convenience of having a soft end to drill through, my machinist says it not a problem for him to drill and cut the hardened shaft. I prefer the fit of a properly sized shaft in the case ( O-ringed) and bearings that were designed to run on a 0.750" shaft. Am I overlooking something, do you see any reason why a series N shaft should not be used? I am interested in your thoughts.

Hey Tom: I showed this as an option (with the soft ends) - the last time I made them I actually used the Thomson shafts with a carbide end mill to cut the holes. Many folks don't have the ability to cut/drill these hardened shafts. I first cut a very tiny "flat spot" where I'm going to start the hole - makes it much easier to ensure the hole is exactly where you want it. I had no problem putting the holes where I needed them on my mill.
