Default 41 pu spare tire options

Hello all,
Hadn’t been on in a while and hope everyone is doing well. I have a 41 pu and I am wondering what my options are on mounting a spare tire? I have a hole in the running board and the indention on my fender and that’s about it. TIA, Randy

The hole in the running board is there to trick you. Actually it is a left over from '39. The spare mounts to the bedside only as shown in the picture. They were originally riveted to the bed but they all broke free and the farmers invoked a field repair which included welding it back on. You will find some brackets with the world's worst welding jobs.

As you did ask for options, I will offer one. I am considering the fact that your truck is not stock so what I suggest will (should) work for you if you choose to go that route.

I have included two photos of an earlier spare bracket assembly. It will work on your '41, again, if you so choose.
I would hazard a guess and say Ford went to that welded bracket during 1940 as it was much cheaper to produce and install.

Thanks guys. When I bought my truck it had been restored, 30 years prior, well everything except the bed. I purchased a bed, assembled and painted not knowing of the correct tire mount. It looks like I could go either way as far as mounts. Either use the running board mount or maybe bolt the other style instead of welding. Thoughts?

You might check your frame under the running board if you want to use the cast style bracket. I recall there is a cast bracket attached to the frame for the running board bracket shown in Kube's photo.

I do have the bracket attached to the frame mounted under the running board. When I got the truck the current running board was on it and it didn’t have the holder for the spare. Looks like I need the older version.

I agree with leaving the spare off. On my 41 I carried it in the bed.

I wanted it just for looks not function. I should have considered taking the indent out of the fender and it wouldn’t look like something missing. This is one of the last things I need to do to the truck.

That indent in the fender is a badge of honor as it is a real real fender. There are guys that have been looking for years and big money to find real Henry fenders.
When I bought my '40, a friend of mine said that first thing you want to look for is the present of rear fenders, then the hood and everything else can be dealt with later.
On mine I have attached the spare mount with button head bolts. Looks just like the original riveted on factory setup.

That’s what I was thinking if I can’t find the running board mount style.

hi Randy, I have a 16 inch '40-'41 wheel with good old 6:00 Atlas tire,
that I have listed here in the "early for sale" Ads a couple weeks ago.
