Default New timing gear

Put a new aluminum timing gear, with a a new crank gear. Backlash is excessive at .008-.010 and there is noise. Is there any cause for this besides bad gears(which I kinda doubt)? I know nothing of the engine's past. Do I need to get an oversize fiber gear?

One of the reasons for a fiber timing gear was to reduce noise.

The crankshaft is in the wrong place and too far away from the camshaft.

On a rebuilt engine, the centerline of the line boring machine is located on the bottom plane of the cylinder block and spaced from the camshaft bores.

With too much cam gear clearance, the crankshaft is closer to the starter motor than it should be.

You may have other issues since the crankshaft and transmission centerlines are offset.

The car ran fine, no problems shifting, no noise from the transmission. I was changing the gear as a preventative maintenance issue. The old fiber gear looked good, and there was chisel marks on the nut so it was replaced at some point in its life. I'm starting to regret the replacement.....

The main caps have chisel marks, 1 for 1 and 2 for 2. The nuts on the bearing caps are a self locking type, not castle and cotter type. The rear main has a 5/16" OD drain tube, with 1 1/8" bosses. The car is a late 31 indented firewall. The engine serial number is gone, or so obscured with paint I can't read it.

I'm assuming it's been rebuilt? I'm not even sure it's original to the car.

Where does one procure an oversize aluminum gear?

Oversize timing gears are made by Dan McEachern (510) 384-7112

Is there anything more detrimental besides the noise to running the small gear? Shock loading the cam? Aluminum wear in the oil?

You are not so far off that there should be a problem with premature wear. There will just be a little more noise than there should be.

My opinion,
