Default Banjo rear end hub, axle bearings and seals

What vendor (parts place) do you guys use to purchase a new pair of rear axle/hub cage bearings and seals?

I have the (according to the bottom adjustable brakes) '39-'42 rear brake and hub assembly.

I also have the reccomended (several past posts) SL-3131 bearing grease to pack them.

Thanks.

Do NOT buy reproduction caged bearings.

Bobby C. I bought 4 tubs/cans of the Sta-Lube SL-3131 from a local Auto Parts store here. They said the warehouse had 16 cans before I bought my 4.

Kube. Thanks for the advice! Then who does sell the correct caged bearings?

When I was young (long time ago) I was taught to never mix new bearings with used races and vice-versa. With a banjo rear housing and hubs we don't have much choice. I have found that finding good used rear hub/drums almost impossible. Either the axle bearing race is poor or the axle taper recess is pitted. I cannot help but wonder how many of us are driving with axle housings that have pits in the race area.

Fred at Southside Obsolete has real bearings. I don't use anything else in a banjo rebuild.

The reproductions have a sorted history of poor quality. The cages were not (are not?) hardened properly and rather quickly, the cage would fail and the bearings were free to go where they wanted. Obviously not something that you want to experience.

Good used bearing are "out there" and worth the effort to find them. The real deal will have the Ford script on the cage.

I have heard horror stories about inferior replacement wheel bearings. Quite a few years ago now (15, 20?) C&G advertised new caged wheel bearings with hardened cages. I purchased a pair after failing to find any good used bearings. Dad and I put over 10k miles on that car in the next fifteen years and had no problems with the wheel bearings.
I would not hesitate to use new C&G bearings.

Kube has good advice. It is worth the effort to find known good Ford bearings
either used or NOS from South side Obsolete (Fred).

John

It helps a bunch if you leave a link to whom you're making reference. Many folks don't have a clue who FRED is. Link BELOW!
