Babbit replacement
Would modern "no lead" plumbing solder work for babbit bearing repairs? Can't find new babbit locally.

No, it is too soft. There are several grades of babbitt, get the best you can buy.

the composition is similar with some of the no lead solder,a little old tin based babbitt and it is closer

Elevator mechanics use babbit to connect the cables to the top of the car. I don't know if it's the proper grade

A shop did mine with what they called diesel tin babbit.

I believe the babbitt used in caterpillar engines is of the highest grade of currently available.
