Mechanical vacuum brake boosters
Does anybody have any information on what's available for mechanical vacuum booster brake parts?
Here is a Searle brain valve in the rod to the pedal I saw this weekend at the truck show. It operated a big diaphragm pulling on the brake cross shaft. My truck has a different one operating a big vacuum cylinder and none of it has any markings. |

There were a lot of different pneumatic (air) vacuum brake manufacturers who made systems which could be fitted to early Ford trucks with mechanical brakes - Westinghouse-Bemdix, Vel-Vac, and Midland Christensen are just a few examples. I have a setup saved from a scrapped truck but it doesn't have a manufacturers name on it.
I doubt there are many sources of parts remaining for any of these vacuum brake systems so you may have to make your own parts.

I'm looking for another set up. If I just knew some part #s or something - I could search on ebay etc.
I cleaned and lubed the one I have since it was sticking in the on position.. I also cleaned out the little horse hair air filter and oiled it up. Last edited by chevy43; 04-28-2024 at 12:31 PM. |

Look at the 55,56 Thunderbird brake booster, They have been used for a long time. JMO

I have a Midland Hy-Power brake booster, 55-57 T-Bird on my '40. It works very good and can be remotely located. There is a company in Austrailia that makes or made a similar design.

Note that there is a VH40 and VH44 with different diaphragm diameters. Good price on Amazon.
