28/29 vs 30/31 phaeton top irons
Hi all,
Was wondering what I have in terms of top irons? I had the black set from when I bought my 28 phaeton but they’re incomplete. I recently purchased the rust colored ones for a pretty good deal but I’m pretty sure that they’re 30/31 as I’ve read from my search that 30/31 wood sits more on top of the irons where 28/29 wood sits inside of the top irons. Any info would be great! Is the wood between 28/29 and 30/31 the same? The one I bought came with an extra wood kit and maybe I could somehow save it for another project? Also where does the top mount to the windshield? I understand the top of the stanchions somehow. What does the attachment area on the top irons or wood kit for the top look like when it attaches to the stanchions? In any case thanks so much in advance and I can provide more pics other than the ones below if need be. Gordy |

As a start, google "fordbarn phaeton top irons". There should be links to old Macs photos. The deluxe irons for 30/31 would be strap, compared to the standard cones I think.

Yes deluxe are made from flat stock; not tubular like standard phaetons and roadsters .
Karl Wescott might have some knowledge of the differences in the tubular. They do not interchange. But like lots of things…could be “engineered” to fit. I’ve some pretty “amazing” engineering….both great and NOT |

From memory there is not a lot of difference between the 28/29 and 30/31 top bows. I think the overall expanded length is diffetent or longer on the 30/31.

Looks right to me. Here's a picture - not the best quality but I think it shows what yours will look like folded out. - |

Re: 28/29 vs 30/31 phaeton top irons
I agree. It definitely looks like 23-25 top irons. It came with a bunch of extra wood too. I think I might try to think of a way to engineer it to fit because these tops are hard to come by and I think the 28/29 phaeton tops are no longer being reproduced. :/
