We're working on a 36 Sedan that hasn't driven since end of the 60s. Engine is being rebuild and I'm working in it's different components.
I cleaned up the (probably original) voltage cutout that goes on top of the generator. Is there a way to test it's correct functioning while it's not installed? Thanks. Dennis ![]() Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G781B met Tapatalk |

Here's a couple of links that may help.

Bob C shared my video that explains it thoroughly. If you are not prepared to do it yourself, I offer service and adjustment of cutouts, as well as generator rebuilding. PM me if interested.

Thanks both!
Steve, great video! I already ran into a few on your generator rebuilds. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, much appreciated. I'll see if I can test it if I can find a variable power source. Maybe I'll open up the cutout and check the things you explained in you video. Dennis Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G781B met Tapatalk |

I got the outer part off of the cutout. Took some time.... The points were pretty corroded, I sanded them down. Points and the air gap above the magnet were adjusted according Steve's input in his great video.
I don't have a variable power source (yet) so I could only test with 6V, 7.5V and 9V with some creativity. 6V doesn't close the points now, but 7.5V (and 9) do. I did notice some damage though. On top of the magnet/coil element, there seems.to be a round cover/ring. Seems to be a small part broke off. Didn't see it when removing the outer housing, but it could have been inside, there was some slight rattling sound in the cutout. Could this affect the functioning or life of the cutout? Thanks. It's fun to do. And nice to have an almost 90 year old part working again and back on the car.

They have to be set a bit above the max battery voltage to do the job. This way, only the higher voltage from the generator will close the switch and bring it on line. The switch should open above battery voltage when the engine is shut down.

Thanks. Do you know the regular max battery voltage for a 6V battery?

A fully charged battery is around 6.35 volts. But confirm by checking specific gravity.

I tested the cutout with an adjustable power source. It closes at around 7.0V and opens again at around 2.5 V.
Would that be an ok setting? Thanks. Dennis Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G781B met Tapatalk |

I adjust them to close at 6.5 - 6.8 volts, but this varies as they heat up. But 7.0 should be ok. There is no separate opening adjustment. |
