48 Ford car rear hub bearing dimensions
LOOKING FOR DIMENSIONS ON 48 fORD CAR REAR HUB. My bearing slides back and forth, Is this normal / Thanks

Yes. The bearing has play and is not a really tight fit. Slides in and out easily.

There should be a inner race/split sleeve that fits over the bearing, so as the bearing doesn't wear the shaft, WHY FORD DIDN'T use Timken tapered roller bearings begs disbelief SMH....., defies logic&rationale&sense.....

Inner race/sleeve FORD part number: 68-1236,HYATT 37155.

Could someone please verify if this type sleeve was ever used in 1939-40 Ford cars. I bought my 40 in 1963 and it did not have these sleeves. |

Roller bearings were probably cheaper.

This is interesting because the end of the axle housings had to be hardened and then machined perfect for the bearing to ride on. This process had to cost more than using Timken-type tapered bearings and races.

Yes the same FORD bearing part numbers: 68-1225&68-1236 were used in 1939&1940 model FORDS except for trucks Mercury also used the same Bearing part numbers, HYATT A1444, sleeve : HYATT 37155. |
