Source for gear shift knob threaded insert/reducer
In this age of Google, I can't believe I'm having such trouble finding a two way threaded insert to put a glass knob on an emergency brake extension.
I need one that is 5/8" 18 pitch OD and 5/16" 24 pitch ID. I've tried so many search word combos, but all that comes up are metric pieces. Does anyone have a source for these? Thanks, Tim |

Re: Source for gear shift knob threaded insert/reducer
Why don't you take a 5/8"x18 bolt and slice off a piece and drill and tap it for 5/16"x24?

Tim,speeddawg.com or speed dawg shift knobs. iv'e recently replaced the original brown v8 ebossed shift knob in my '37 fordor cause the original knob way to small for my hand and dont car for shape of it either. imo the price was right i believe all the choices have a same size insert and you specify which insert you need.also geta washer which i did not use and a jam nut. Tom.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Hard to believe this is such a difficult item to source. I seem to recall these were fairly common items.

There on Ebay. Search, brass shift knob insert. Can get six different styles and metric or 5/8.

For some reason the knob peddlers all want to force the use of communist threads!

I have gotten this type of insert at Fastenal (sp?). I don't remember the exact dimensions I used buy they had a selection to choose from.

Re: Source for gear shift knob threaded insert/reducer
Found one on Ebay. For the $10, it wasn't worth my time to make it at this point. Maybe when I retire I'll make a run of them.

Re: Source for gear shift knob threaded insert/reducer
First part I ever made on a lathe was an insert to put a larger thread shift knob onto a Hurst shifter…..

Re: Source for gear shift knob threaded insert/reducer
IIRC, JC Whitney's shift knob bushing increased your mileage by 15%. Not sure if anybody elses's version topped that, but it's unlikely.....
