v8 transmission breakdown

I'm trying to remove the input shaft of a 48 case with later 78 case gears. I have the bearing retainer off. I'm tapping on part 7025 and it is loose but won't come out all the way.

What am I missing?

Have you dropped the cluster gear down? Typically the input shaft won’t come out until the cluster is out of the way.

BINGO!! That's "the key that has to turn" to get that input shaft out and I'm sure that is mentioned in MacVP's transmission book.

I have ground some of the teeth on the pilot shaft down enough to clear the cluster gear. Then I could use the pilot shaft to align the disk and pp.

This was in 1965-66, I did not have the time or tools I did later. Just get it running.

There are a few tricks for getting some of the later gear combinations together or apart when the early 48 case is used. I'm not sure if Mac mentions any of this in his book, but there are some posts on this or other websites that walk you thru these assemblies.

As others noted - you have to pull the main cluster support shaft to drop the cluster down - such that the input shaft will come out. The only situation where this is not needed is when you're running certain Lincoln Zephyr gear sets - the input has some synchro teeth ground off of it to let it slip past the cluster.

I'd made a puller / pusher that R&R the front bearing prior to attempting to remove the shaft. That made the installation of later gears in the early cases so much easier.
