Hey Guys! What rear axle gear ratios were available from Ford in a 1948 V8 convertible? Thanks in advance! - F F

If I'm not mistaken, the 3:78 was the standard, the 4:11 being optional.

Why was the 4:11 an option. for trucks; half ton, one ton?(Tudor, Fordor for those with 'extended family' and a full trunk) . . . thank you!
I once bought a '36 half-ton not thinking about the gear ratio. At that time I had no idea about gear ratios; that they existed. I soon learned. This '36 had a 4:11. I peeled through ads; found a 3:78. WOW! Great in town, great on the country roads! |

For whatever it's worth... My 47 (convert, heavy) came with 3.54. A buddy's 48 Merc (convert) came with 4.11. In my opinion, my 47 with 3.54 was a slug around town. I 'hotted up' the engine, then it was more drivable. The 48 Merc was good at the stoplight, but ng on the road. We changed the 48 to 3.78 with a Columbia. With the 3.78, it was much more friendly to drive. Never did hook up the Columbia, but, at least it's there for some future day...

Another option would be to keep the 3.54 and go with the wide ratio (29 tooth cluster) transmission. It is about 10% lower in first and second thus acting like a 3.78/standard ratio in those gears.

If you are going with a 3.54 rear end use these transmission gears. I have this set up in a '47 tudor and it's great driving, anywhere.

Again, for whatever it's worth, my 47 came with the 29 cluster already installed. (as well as the 3.54 already mentioned.)
