A question for the Flat Head V8 gurus: PCV ventilation,
I have on back order a triple Offy intake for a 1938 to 48 flathead. It will go on my 8BA motor (1949 to 53) . ( Edelbrock discontinued the similar manifold.) I dislike the road draft and fill tube holes in the later manifold. What do you think about installing a PCV valve inside the manifold in the partition between the front intake ports and the front internal engine chamber. It seems to be possible. It would be hidden. The rear fuel pump stand would get a K & N type filter for an oil fill and breather intake (electric fuel pump.) Has this been done? Did it work? Thank you, Bob |

IMO not worth the effort. If you want to eliminate crankcase stink when not moving, run a tube from a Xler style breather oil fil cap on the pump stand to the carb air filter. Leave the road draft opening alone or stuff it with some SS scouring pad to filter out sticks & stones .

Thank you for the reply. It should not be very difficult. A hidden hole, grommet and insert.
I want to avoid clutter on the motor. No filler tubes, no road draft tubes, no rubber hoses, Just 3 beautiful Stromberg 97's, 3 chrome helmet air cleaners, stainless braid gas lines, Finned aluminum heads. A work of 1950's art. Surely someone has tried the PVC thing on a flat head. |

I have had several intakes built by Baxter Ford Parts in Lawrence KS. On the last which was an Offenhauser super dual for the 49-53 motor he uses the apporpriate sized grommet fitted into the road draft tube hole with a PCV valve with a threaded fitting to which he added a hard line back to the side of the intake which he tapped for the other end of the hard line. He's done several of these for me and they have worked great.

I've had 3 stromburge carbs with progressive linkage on a 294ci flathead for a customer. Carbs hav e benn been rebuilt by the best . This system will be for sale in the near as it's being replaced bu an edelbrock 4bl. No mater what I did over the past 5or6 years. I couldn't get this system yo work right, Can't get the AF lean and if i di it just doesn't run right am righ will destroy thr rungs. This was an expensive build. I was gona swap out the carbs for Holly 94's but the owner said 4bl/
We'll see how this runs?? Gramps |

![]() Ah, the M/E Wagner pcv. Works great and infinitely tuneable...kinda spendy but what a nice product! I have one on a '66 Fairlane and am very impressed. Terry

It is important to understand how the original road-draft/vent system works. The road-draft vacuum was pulled from the front of the manifold - which connected to the upright draft tube from down in the crankcase. This pulls combustion gasses and water vapor from down in the crankcase (not from the valley area). The example above still accomplishes this - which ensures the system works as close to possible as it should (on a later 49-53 engine).
On a 59X block, you also need to run the oil-baffle tube in the rear of the intake - which is usually missing. This directs the incoming air down into the crankcase. Also on a 59X block, you need to weld up the original oil-pan vent that pulled vapors out the pan itself. I question how well this system worked in the first place . . . though it was great for "chassis lubrication". ![]() If you decide to retrofit an earlier manifold onto a later 49-53 engine, then the RIGHT way to pull the vacuum is from the same upright crankcase ventilation tube in the front of the engine. I would take the tube out, weld the top-closed and mount a PCV in the side of it. You have to make sure the PCV you use is designed to be mounted in whatever position you fabricate/rework the front to encompass it. Some PCVs have to be vertically oriented (at a slight angle - like a valve cover) - some are designed for a horizontal mount, etc. I like the adjustable one shown in the above setup - though it would be a bit hard to "adjust it" when you can't get to it. There are creative ways to use it - but it takes more fabrication and custom parts to do it (to place it down in the valley). The system from CoopMan is a very well thought out system as well . . . so plenty of ways to skin the cat! |

Here is a picture of the rear 59x oil-vent baffle that should be ran in 59x engines. They're almost always missing when you pickup a used engine.
