My 1950 f1 tailgate rattles like crazy. Do I have to cut and weld the large top links to tighten it up? Bob

Can you provide some pictures of your tailgate?

For the bottom hinge I have made bushings from poly tubing and for the rattling chains I use a piece of bicycle inner tube. While I have not done it, the big link you mentioned can be shortened to put tension to the bed sides. Haven't owned an early 50's PU for a while. I am assuming they used the same type hardware as the jailbars.

Pictures would absolutely help. My stock '49 behaves nicely - sleeving the chains eliminates any rattling from them.

I also used bicycle inner tube when I had my 'ol pickup. I didnt want the chains rattling and mostly rubbing the new paint. My tailgate did not rattle.

There are rubber bumpers for the tailgate channel. Carpenter has them.

My wife rides in back, her legs are long enough to reach the tailgate.

I used large clear shrink to fit around the chain hook, and the tailgate mount on my 36 pickup. Tightened up everything and looks good. Ron

Got a link? I see nothing in their online catalog like that, and haven't ever heard of them.

Try this link, I know it says 53-72 but I don't know why they would work on the earlier trucks. It sure tightened up the tailgate on my 54! |

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm going to shorten the big top links to tighten it up. If it still bothers me, add some sort of rubber bumpers.

The tailgate on my beater '28 roadster pickup doesn't rattle but I kinda like the paint scratch patterns the chains make on the post sockets.
