I’m thinking of trying a Stromberg 97 on my banger. I already have a manifold for a Webber carburetor that I would like to use. Does anybody know of a source for an adapter? I realize that a great many of you could and would make your own but that is not really an option for me

I went from a Weber to a Stromberg 97. I went ahead and purchased a new manifold for the 97, then sold my Weber complete as a set.

Obviously you thought the Stromberg was preferable to the Webber (which I have heard from others as well).

I'm finding this conversation about Stromberg 97 vs Weber interesting. I have just fitted a Weber to one of my cars and a copy Weber to another. I'm happy with the results but wonder whether a 97 might have been better.
FWIW, For the copy carburettor, I fabricated a manifold out of 3mm (1/8") sheet to suit.

I have had multiples of both on my cars--- I will say I do like the weber better. It just seems to run consistently the same. My strombergs seem to run a little different with each tank of gas.

Jordan,
If your Strombergs are old, you may be fighting vacuum leaks. I chased the tuning of a Stromberg when I put on the supercharger and an air/fuel meter. I ended up buying a new Stromberg and it tuned in much better. Of course, these days, each tank of gas is probably a little different with unknown amounts of alcohol in each tank in the ground. |

One thing that causes me to lean toward the Stromberg is that it is so much easier to work on and with (for a so so mechanic (me)). There is no doubt that a Webber can be tuned to work better than the Stromberg but you really need to know what you’re doing and probably should have an air/fuel sensor. My understanding is that the Webber will deliver better fuel economy if that is a priority.

I really had no problem with the Weber, it was just that my engine builder (the late Ron Kelley) preferred the Stromberg 97, so that is what I went with. I bought one of the new units that are currently being made in the UK. Ron re-jetted it to suit the Model A.

I made an adapter out of hardwood, I think hardwood isn't necessary but I had some. I adapted a Winfield manifold to a 38/38 Weber, worked just fine, and also acted as an heat insulator for the carb.

Great idea Jim! How did you feel about the performance of the Webber as compared maybe to a Stromberg? I know none of your engines are ever close to stock and your Webber is bigger than that typically used on a banger but even so I would be interested to get your opinion

One benefit of the 97 is is can easily be made to run with out a fuel pump.

Walls, some where I have the drawings I did at the time, I have a big day tomorrow but will see if I can find them ,if not I will be away until 27th so then I will look them out,, or pull the carb off the model a and take some pics. there is more than just drilling out the hole
