I decided against a fuel shutoff rebuild kit and instead, for a new valve.
For kicks, I dis-assembled the old shutoff (see attachment). I was expecting to see some old grungy packing but all I saw was tapered brass. What gives? Leo |

What packing? What you see is all there was.

Thats all there is, brass on brass. Tooth paste works good to polish the two brass fittings tapered and the o-ring. work back and forth to polish.

The only packing in a shutoff valve is between the taper and the handle. It seals against fuel leaking out of the valve near the handle. Yours is a repro valve with an O ring for that. The originals had a thick washer made from some fibrous material that sealed when the nut under the handle on was tightened.

Tom Wesenburg (sp?) claimed that toothpaste was a good lapping compound to use on the fuel shutoff valve.
