Fuel pump push rod
I have an original 1933 aluminum intake manifold that was modified per Ford Service Bulletin Nov-Dec 1933 to use the later 34 onward fuel pumps. See page 135 in the reprinted book. The distance from the top of this manifold for the fuel pump attachment to the base is 2.342 inches and on my 1936 aluminum manifold the distance is only 1.358 inches. The Green Book lists only three V8 fuel pump rods;
18-9400 B which is 8.10 inches for the 32-33 only fuel pump 48-9400 A which is 8.872 inches and is for the cast iron manifold 48-9400 B which is 7.872 inches and is for the aluminum manifold. My question is; what fuel pump rod is correct for the 1933 manifold in the photo? Thank, John |

The 48-9400-A pushrod [the long one] is used in conjunction with the high boss valve chamber cover.
The 48-9700-B [1 inch shorter] is used in conjunction with the low boss valve chamber cover. The pictured 33 valve chamber cover above has the high boss, consequently needs the longer pushrod 48-9700-A. The A & B in the part numbers are not arse about!

Brian, OK, could you please explain to me what is a high boss valve chamber and what is a low boss valve chamber. Are they both aluminium and are they both 1933 types or other. I have looked through 6 ford parts books from 1933 to 1949 and not found any reference of the A & B compared to the push rod lengths. I did find A & B listed. Intake manifolds are not really shown well. I always thought that the longer rod went with the cast iron manifolds. Thanks, Kevin.

The service bulletins show two different heights for the intake manifold fuel pump adapter mounting surface. Also the 35-36 club restoration book shows the same. The mounting surface height changed in 35. Both the 33 and 34 engines with their intake manifolds took the same fuel pump push rod. The green chassis parts book from 1950 is very clear with lengths and usage for the various part numbers.
48-9400-A is 8.872" and used on cast iron covers 48-9400-B is 7.872" and used on aluminum covers The early chassis parts book from 34 do show 40-9400 but it appears this part number went obsolete between 35 to 36 and replaced by 48-9400-B So i went to my 34 engine and installed the 33 intake manifold and all the info above is correct the 48-9400-B=7.872" long is the proper fuel pump push rod. The same rod is used with the 34 intake, both have the 2.31" tall fuel pump adapter mount surface. Do remember the engine blocks changed from 34 to 35. |

I don't have a photo of the inlet manifold with the 1 inch lower fuel pump mounting boss, but one such example can be seen here; https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...afold.1124578/
Note the lower boss, this manifold takes the 7 7/8 long pushrod. Compare the height with the subject manifold, it should be evident that the mount is higher, accordingly requires a longer pushrod.

Also, slightly off topic, as this only applies to 35 and later inlet manifolds; because there is two differing fuel pump mount heights, the baffle tube 48-6756, that fits under fuel pump mount flange and spigots into the block is made in two lengths to suit.
