Al.....As I said before, I wouldn't have put the rear bumpers on, but I did see the obvious advantage to protecting the rear, just in case of an accident.....so, I decided they will stay!

I love that truck, especially the color. Also think the sideboards look great.

Just wondering if anyone with a Model A pickup on Ford Barn, actually doesn't have side boards.

Am I the only one who thinks the Model A pickup looks good without the sideboards?

You guys are giving me a complex!.....Ha,ha!

None on mine. There is beauty in simplicity.

I've studied a lot of available recent photos of Model A pickup trucks, and I'd say 3 out of 4 have side boards.

I also don't like the looks of those step plates on the running boards, things on the radiator cap, rock shields, and just about anything that didn't come from the factory.

(note: Someone in the past put on those rear bumpers, and although I wouldn't bother to add them, those will stay.)

So.....what do you prefer?

Since you asked, side boards could be authentic. Depending on need, original owners might have put them on. But I'd guess they were raw wood, maybe whatever used boards were handy - not carved, varnished ones like today. If they're used, I prefer them cab height and painted to match the truck. Or how about a canopy top with roll-up side curtains (a Ford authorized accessory)?

I also don't like a lot of bling on a Model A. They were low-priced cars during a depression so I doubt most buyers had much spare change for accessories. And commercial vehicles were supposed to work for a living, not look pretty. That said, step plates can protect running boards, especially on pickups where the boards are painted instead of rubber mat. Quails don't look right on a truck but a moto-meter (no wings) that supposedly has a practical use is okay.

As for rear bumpers, they're just cosmetic unless they're extended like yours. I don't like the look of extensions but I suppose they may offer some protection. But if so, I wouldn't think the split ones do much - better to have a full-width matching the front and just be careful not to chip the tailgate paint on it.

You have a sweet little truck and I'm not dissing it. But since we're talking about "anything that didn't come from the factory", it appears all-black wasn't an original color scheme:

And I believe paint left matte was standard on commercials - polished was extra cost. How do you feel about Ford authorized accessories?

Simplicity is evident in this photo of ndnchf's 1930 Ford Model A Pick-up. Very neat.

The local rural fire dept. in the late 70’s took a army surplus 6by6 and installed a tank to haul water. It had a canvas covered stock rack that the sides could be folded down for seating and keep the basic frame.
I have thought this idea would make a good way of adding seating to a pickup when needed and fold up and use as side boards.

The Model A Ford pickup bed was built to accept the wooden stakes for the sideboards. Whether or not actual sideboards were offered as an option, Ford realised that sideboards would be a useful option for a work truck.
