Gas guage outer ring not seating
I’m installing repro gas gauge. I can’t get the outer ring to seat with the gauge assembly in place. I remove the gauge assembly and I can easily screw the outer ring in place, nice and tight. I have followed the schematic for the gaskets and I’m confident this is done correctly. I have done this before on another car and didn’t have too much of a problem. Thinking gauge assembly is unit is way out of specs. Any suggestions?

Re: Gas guage outer ring not seating
So the outer ring does not contact the gauge?

With the gauge out of the tank, check the fit of the outer ring onto the gauge. Some of the reproduction outer rings are tight in their inside diameter or have “flashing” that wasn’t trimmed before the outer ring was plated. Careful trimming with a round file may be necessary.

Re: Gas guage outer ring not seating
I don't know if I can paste into this communication, but will try to paste a sheet from Tom Endy on the gas gauge. When you have all the gaskets in place you really need two to three of the brass rings on the large ring. http://Gas-Gauge-Repair.pdf
If this doesn't work search Tom Endy - Gas gauge repair and it might come up |

Re: Gas guage outer ring not seating
The outer ring contacts the gauge, but when the gauge isin place it will not screw down, it slips. When the gauge is out the outer ring screws down nice and tight.

Re: Gas guage outer ring not seating
So what slips? Are the threads towards the outer side stripped? The bezel just squeezes the gaskets that are around the gauge.

Gang, not to be lecturing but does he have the battery disconnected while working on an open gas tank?

Re: Gas guage outer ring not seating
Threads are not stripped, without the gauge in place the outer ring screws in tight.

Re: Gas guage outer ring not seating
You said it’s a repro gauge. Does it use a neoprene gasket or cork gasket? I prefer the cork gasket with a thin coat of grease or Vaseline. It compresses better than the neoprene gasket. And, you have the brass slip rings on the outside of the gauge body rather than under the gauge body? It sounds like, for whatever reason the gauge body is not seating into the tank flange enough to allow the outer nut (ring) to thread into the flange. If you have the outer nut from the old gauge you are replacing, give it a try just for fit. Some of the repro outer nuts have an undercut at the end of the threads so the nut can be tightened into the flange more. In this case, the undercut may be keeping the nut from getting started with the gauge in place.

Do you have the brass slip rings in place?

Re: Gas guage outer ring not seating
I was able to find an original outer ring and when I installed it, it seated perfectly. I compared the original ring and the repro outer ring and the repro had half the the threads of the original outer ring. So the problem for me was poor quality. IE the repro outer ring was made in China.
