Does anyone know what the special washer in the U-Joint bolt up to the output shaft on the transmission purpose is? When I changed my transmission there
was not one, only a lock washer. Does it prevent a problem by not having one? Thanks for any input or answer. John |

Yes, you need it. It's actually a type of spring that has a specific type of name that I'd assume was name after the inventor. When you look, it's slightly concaved and this allows for some slight movement while still being substantial enough to hold the input shaft while also taking the force of the drive shaft wanting to push the U-joint forward and aft.

The flat washer with the notch in it fits over the end of the transmission output shaft and prevents oil from leaking out through the splines. The Mitchell company offers one that has a rubber seal associated with it. They provide one with each of their synchro transmissions.

The edge of the dished washer has an upset to engage a spline end .This stops the washer turning when you tighten it up .

Thanks for all the input, looks like it is essential, and I will be getting one.
Thanks again, John |
