I've heard that Delo no longer has zddp. I use a valvoline racing oil that has a big yellow sticker on the front that says "ZDDP, contains zinc"

No need for non-HD (high detergent) oil. That's a story from the past. Just use 10w-30 or 10w-40. What do you suppose the factories have used for oil in their new cars for the last half century or so? It's far more important to follow a proper break-in procedure. The ring manufacturer is the best source for this. Methods vary and experienced mechanics all have their favorite. Basically, you need to accelerate and decelerate repeatedly to load the rings, then back off to let engine vacuum pull some oil up, then repeat.

Josh, there are several points to consider before buying an oil for your engine. First, when Model As were made, there was no ZDDP or any other additive available so our engines were designed to run on non-detergent, straight mineral oil. We don't have camshaft/lifter problems because our engines don't make the power or devlop enough stress in the valve system to require it. Second, by using a non-detergent oil, you are giving up the following: Oxidation and bearing corrosion inhibitors (to keep the oil from thickening and your bearings in good shape for a very long time), rust and "iron" corrosion inhibitors (to prevent rust from forming on "shiny" parts), detergents/dispersants (to keep products of combustion and other junk in suspension and off the internal parts of your engine), foam inhibitors (foam won't lubricate anything), extreme pressure additives (like ZDDP, but different chemistry), and others. Oil "detergents" are not the Lux Liquid type (why would anyone design an oil with an additive that would wash off oil? They don't). These are chemicals that prevent sludge and varnish buildup on internal parts - something I would think you'd want to do with a new engine. Stay away from non-detergent oils in any engine and take advantage of 80 years of oil technology.

I can tell you from first hand experience the result of non-detergent oil in a Model A. How about 1/2 inch of sludge on every horizontal surface in the engine, oil pan, valve chamber, etc? Does that sound good?
When I got my 28 it had the 1/2 inch of sludge. I cleaned it out, put in a filter and used detergent oil. The purpose of detergent in oil is to suspend the dirt in the oil so it goes out when you change the oil, not build up in the engine. Oil filter is also good as it catches the dirt as well. Non detergent oil is easy to find. Look for the cheapest oil at Mal Wart. Last edited by mrtexas; 04-28-2011 at 01:56 PM. |

josh1331 ...................
The story about not using HD oil came out when the HD oil first came out. It did create problems in old engines, which were full of sludge. The HD oil would break this sludge down and pieces would clog oil lines, etc. Now, you should not use synthetic oil in new engines, as it is so slick, you just can't break in your engine. HD oil is perfect for your new engine. MIKE ![]() |

Here we go again. ANY oil that you use is better than what was available 80 years ago.
