Re: 31 pickup leaking steering box
Cornhead grease is likely what you are looking for. Read up on that.
Steering housing end plate with the longer tube. is probably what you are talking about. |

Re: 31 pickup leaking steering box
Where is it leaking from?clean the box and try to see where, might save you from changing the endplate and light rod tube.
Corn Head Grease is an extreme pressure, polyurea thickened grease, formulated specifically for use. in corn head gear cases and most other slow moving gear box applications requiring an NLGI “0” grease. Corn Head Grease will not leak from the gear case or drain from the gears during idle periods. |

Without further dismantling the steering box itself, other vendors also supply a large thin flat washer and o-ring in their Steering Box Gasket Sets to go around the sector shaft where it goes through the chassis to stop the flow of grease in that area. Installation entails removing the pitman arm and taking out the steering box to chassis mounting bolts and loosening the upper steering column clamp inside the car so that you can install these parts on the sector housing before it mounts to the chassis. This particular "fix" is far less of a guaranteed "fix" than the End Plate Tube and severe leakage at the sector housing can only be remedied with a rebuild of either the sector housing bushings and a new sector gear and or installation of a sector shaft seal (machine work required) or a rebuilt/new sector housing that has been modified with needle bearings and said seal and the possibility of a new sector shaft to fit the modified unit. Godd luck, Bob Bader |

Re: 31 pickup leaking steering box
Steering gear end plate, braze or solder a tube on it to prevent oil from leaking onto wiring harness, easy to make or see Brattons catalog #5280

Re: 31 pickup leaking steering box
I put the end plate with the tube in when I rebuilt mine, but it leaked anyway. Turns out it was leaking round the bolts. I pulled the bolts and put thread sealant on them and fixed it.

Re: 31 pickup leaking steering box
The tube is loose in the end plate and the whatever oil, grease you put in there will leak out. braze or silver solider it back on. Use a new gasket and make sure the plate is not bent from over tightening . Or buy a new one.
