Kelsey-Hayes rims on new cast iron
I've installed cast iron rear drums but now my K-H rims won't fit. It seems that the new emergency/parking brake casting is larger than original. Has anybody else encountered this? What is your solution? I've been grinding the welds where the spokes join the rims, but they still won't fit. Is there an "easy" solution? Thanks. Ned

It won't solve the problem but might give more data, will an original Model A rim fit?

Re: Kelsey-Hayes rims on new cast iron
You can only use Kelsey Hayes wheel on rear cast drums by grinding the heck out of the inner spoke ends to clear the drum. Not a cool thing to do, but if you are careful it will work.

I was not comfortable with grinding the spokes.

Re: Kelsey-Hayes rims on new cast iron
I have a 31 Vicky sitting on Kelsey Hayes, I haven’t looked to see if anything was modified. Parked for 50+years. I’m told 1 is missing. I can try to get a picture.

Re: Kelsey-Hayes rims on new cast iron
Steve, how much interference is there? Can/could the drum itself be machined on the outside some to gain the necessary clearance?

Re: Kelsey-Hayes rims on new cast iron
I think I would call Randy Gross and ask him if the drums he sells clear, 714-292-8660 or email [email protected]. If so, send the ones you have back and buy from him.

Re: Kelsey-Hayes rims on new cast iron
I solved it by grinding the "bump" of the spoke welds. Not a great idea but it works. Was a real pain to do. Then painted over the grind marks.
Wish I'd have known of the problem earlier as the drums could have been truned. Ned
