1951 Starter 6&8

Does anyone know if the 6 and 8 cylinder starters are interchangeable, I see all kinds of V8 starters but none for the 6-cylinder engine. Specifically looking for a 12 volt starter for H226 engine.

Most of the starters in the 8BA era are the same. The exception is the one for the automatic transmissions. They started to change after a few years into the y-block era.

I understand that most use the 6V starter after the 12V conversion.

Yep! Has worked for me for a lotta years.

I had a 6V starter in my Model A, while it worked fine it had a tendency to eat up starter drives. Since I converted the starter to 12V there have been no issues.

6 cylinder and 8 cylinder starters and starter drives are the same.

I believe the 6 cylinder starters have a 9 tooth drive while the V8 starters have a 10 tooth drive. Check the part numbers.

amodel25 is correct. The stock 6 cylinder starter will not interchange with the V8 starter. You will need to either get the correct gear or change your flywheel for the V8. I have a V8 flywheel on my H series with the V8 starter.

The Truck parts book shows both 9 and 10 tooth drives used on the H engines, no explanation of why.
