Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
I will measure the compression today.
Someone another tip where I can easily measure the oil pressure. Where can I connect a single meter? Below pictures of the engine in the car. |

On the rear of the engine left top of bellhousing you can see the oilpressure sender.
Should be another port there with a plug in it. |

Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
My $ .02 worth, you have gotten a lot of good advice on here, as stated....do a compression check on the motor.....IF they are all equal numbers (or close to equal) then I would change the oil to the proper weight oil with one quart of it being Marvel Mystery Oil, check the plug gaps and clean, check the timing and carburetor adjustments and make any necessary changes and drive that car and enjoy it!!! I would be more worried about whats coming out of the tailpipe with the car running!!!

Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
the oil pressure idle is +/- 1 bar (14.5 psi)
If I give full gas 2.1 bar (30.5 psi) The compression meter is broken so I have ordered a new one for this, I will measure when the new meter comes in. |

Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
It looks like the previous owners added an accessory oil filler cap at the back. The 1935 models usually have a sort of scoop back there. The accessory cap looks to have a flex breather line to the air filter I assume. This would act as an ad hoc PCV system to recirculate the oil vapors from blow by. It should vent out the front corner of the oil pan. The accessory might be preventing proper crankcase circulation. 1935 was the first year to have the draft vent at the front right corner of the oil pan unless that is an earlier engine.
Folks used to pour household cleaners down the carburetor air horn at idle to try and reseat the rings. I don't recommend this but it was not uncommon for folks to try and get the car to quit burning oil any way they could without actually fixing the problem. That oil filler cap is another type of fix. Here is a scoop type: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1936-Ford-F...UAAOSw~65cjvce |

Judging by those numbers they defiantly aren't "Fresh Rebuilt" numbers but "nothing" of concern that I see for you to just drive it and enjoy it!!! Compression will be the next hurdle. IF they are all even, clean it and drive it!!!! IF you are striving for 1935 correctness, there are several items that would need to be changed to make it 1935 "correct".......IF NOT then just drive and enjoy!!!! |

Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
I also measured all 8 again after I put oil in the cylinder.
Below the result. Some cylinders respond to the oil and some do not. |

Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
Compression looks okay with one cylinder being a "little" lower than all the others. As stated with Rotors response, fix the crank case ventilation system back to original and clean it, clean the engine, change the oil and make sure the correct viscosity oil is in it, ad a quart of MMO, makes sure the timing is set right, clean the spark plugs, make sure the carburetor is adjusted correctly and drive that baby!!!! Enjoy that car and keep us posted on all the fun you have with it!!!

Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
I think Ford had complaints about the scoop because of oil vapor smell that would come from there after shut down or setting at idle under the right conditions. All Ford did was change over to the standard plain filler cap after that but the stand had quite an oil baffle in it. They kept that arrangement till the end of the 59 series engines in 1948. The scoop would be correct but may be worse than the aftermarket cap that is already in place. I don't have much experience with the 35 & 36 cars so I do not know how they act.
The compression readings look pretty good to me. Some are a little low but that may change with some driving kilometers. It does not seem to have any major problems inside. |

Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
thanks again for your help. I bought the marvel oil. Simply pour this into the carburetor while the engine is running.(cold or hot?) Or pour in the spark plug holes and leave it for a few days ...?
Hope it helps. Because this way you can't drive the car. It seems like local fog behind the car. A huge amount of smoke comes out of the exhaust. If I have time I will film it ... Last edited by Piet; 04-10-2019 at 08:00 AM. |

Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
First, We always keep a can of MMO in the trunk of all our V8's and do like my Granddad did for years and years and put a cap full or three in with the gas every fill up. Second....the can you have, I would add the whole can as part of the Oil change and run that until the next oil change and then "maybe" do it again for one more oil change......AS for the pouring down the carburetor while it is running, I have never done that SO let others that posted that procedure chime in on that!!!! Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day so give it a little time to see IF it all helps!!! It may take some time of driving to see it work!!

Re: 1935 V8 convirteble sedan engine broken
If it still smokes that bad after adding the MMO it doesn't sound good.My engine smoked so bad that I decided to pull a head and" voila".The motor was worn out.Nothing would have helped it.Drain the coolant before removing the head.

Have you changed the oil? How much oil did you put in? Mike
