Re: Christchurch NZ Earthquake
We were horrified & deeply saddened to see the devastating news about Christchurch New Zealand. What can we say except that our thoughts are with all Kiwis at this tragic time. Sue & I have traveled all over N.Z. and have great affection for N.Z. and its wonderful people.

I am hoping the rescue crews remain safe during the days that lie ahead, and that those trapped in the rubble remain calm during their various predicaments while waiting for help to arrive. Keep on keeping on - we all know you can. |

Re: Christchurch NZ Earthquake
Jeff, I'm in Wellington and we get lots of (so far) small earthquakes each year. We're on the Pacific ring of fire, where there are a series of techtonic plates meeting. Parts of Asia are on the same ring.
The South Island of NZ where Christchurch is has two plates meeting, one subducting under the other, which has caused our Southern Alp mountain range to form. The geologists amongst us may want to make more accurate comments but I'm sure you get the gist. Our Australian cousins call NZ "The Shakey Isles" for obvious reasons Regards Mike. |

Re: Christchurch NZ Earthquake
I think its too early to evaluate, but our sept 4th quake lodged 160,000 claims, this quake at only 5km deep has done substantially more damage than the September 4th quake.

Re: Christchurch NZ Earthquake
Relatively rare yes that we sustain damage to buildings and land. We do have minor tremors from time to time like others

Re: Christchurch NZ Earthquake
As some one who lives in Napier, site of a massive earthquake in 1931 with the loss of 256 lives you become very aware of them. I was surprised to read that Flathead Ted, had not experienced one. As previous writers have said NZ is known as the Shakey Isles. Earthquakes occur here on a daily basis, most are too small to be noticed. Here in Hawkes Bay we get 2-3 a year that make the hair on your neck stand up! I read yesterday that where the Australian plate and the Pacific plate meet, the Pacific plate is moving between 35 -45mm S.W each year. As of this morning urban rescue teams from around the world are in action on the ground, the death toll has reached 102, and there are still over 200 people unaccounted for. Thank you so much for the thoughts and prayers, they are appreciated. Even though we are no where near Christchurch, you cannot help but feel very emotionally involved, as stories and pictures emerge of both horror and heroism. I have still not heard anything from TudorTom. He lives in Bexley, which is in the East of Christchurch and one of the areas that wore the brunt of the shake, I understand that the area has suffered from major liquification problems, and are still without power, water, or sewerage. I do hope him and his family made it ok.

Re: Christchurch NZ Earthquake
Hi Ted. To be honest, in the 30 odd years I lived in Auckland I never felt one, but in the 10 years I've been in Wellington (dragged down here by my wife) I've felt plenty. I guess it depends on whereabouts you live on the islands. |

Re: Christchurch NZ Earthquake
Like Bick, I live in Napier. We do indeed have frequent small shakes, and then mebbe two or three a year that'll make you wonder why you live there. However, the palm lined streets, the art deco buildings, the fact that I drive to work in nine minutes and the great temperate climate soon overcomes those thoughts.
I spent years 1953 to 1972 in Christchurch, and I cannot remember ever feeling an earthquake in that time. I lived 19 years in Auckland, and I cant remember ever feeling an earthquake there either. |
