How The 'Pickup Truck' Got It's Name
"in 1925 -- Ford Motor Company introduced the first 'pickup' based on the Model T Runabout. Ford offered the rear 'pickup box' separately at their Dealerships Parts Department for $25.00. The box was then bolted onto the back of the vehicle as an accessory. Since the box was 'picked up' at the Parts Department by the customer, the term 'pickup' took hold for this style of vehicle. Later the box was installed at the factory and evolved into today's pickup truck. Customer could also 'pick up' their box at the local Post Office after shipment from the factory"

Re: How The 'Pickup Truck' Got It's Name
FUN & INTERESTING things we learn, here !---But WHY do some Folks call a SUV, a "TRUCK"????
Speaking of SUVs, that Pontiac AZTEK they built a few years ago will become a desireable collectible, I ""think" they only built 3 of them!--LOL----UGLY as MUD! Are some attrocious designs done as a CALCULATED WRITE OFF? Bill Wondering

Re: How The 'Pickup Truck' Got It's Name
I NEVER liked MINI-VANS, Station Wagons, SUVs or plain old Vans! And, I don't like ""SISSY" Trucks, with all kinds of chrome crap! AND, I NEVER owned a RED Car!

Is this from a reliable source, or just another made-up urban legend? |

Re: How The 'Pickup Truck' Got It's Name
Ford built pick up trucks in 1925 at the factory for a short while before the introduction of the " improved " T in '26. After that the folks who wanted that box so they could convert their own '25 roadsters to p-u could get the parts at their Ford dealer. I am not familiar with the '26-'27 years. My own 1925 roadster pick up was built out of an original roadster + a pick up box and other parts from Steve Coniff .

Because they're built on a truck chassis (or at least used to be)? Gotta agree on the Aztek. Last edited by CHuDWah; 08-15-2018 at 03:39 PM. Reason: I shoulda read the whole thread - guess the question has already been answered. |
